Rebel Congress MP Kabir Suman chose not to vote in the presidential election held at the state Assembly on Thursday as he feared for his safety.
“My well-wishers called me to say that if I had gone to cast my vote, I would have been lynched. I do not want to get into a scuffle with my friends, so I chose not to go,’’ Suman said.
Except for Suman, all the TMC MPs cast their votes in the election. Suman had, however, sent intimation to the Assembly secretariat that he would cast his vote here.
Sudip Bandopadhyay, Trinamool Congress chief whip in Lok Sabha and Union minister of state for health, said they had expected Suman to vote.
About 10 days ago, Suman called Pranab Mukherjee and asked him about the process of voting in the presidential election.
